Physical Education

TIBHS has a vision that exceeds just academic excellence. TIBHS aspires to create confident, well-rounded young people who will be the future leaders of society.

Our comprehensive sports programme cultivates a winning mentality in our students, encouraging them to strive and excel in all that they do. In providing varied sporting experiences for students; which aim to build excellence and confidence within pupils, no child will have his talent hidden or lost.

The Physical Education (PE) department uphold a true commitment to excellence in all what we do. The PE curriculum has been designed in a way to promote and develop a lifelong love for sport and physical activity. We also aim to provide pupils with a curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. We offer opportunities to build character and help to embed values of fairness, teamwork and respect.

Every pupil at TIBHS will engage in two hours of physical exercise a week as it is a core subject within the National Curriculum. This will be practical time when the young men will have time to master a wide range of different Sports and put this into practise whether representing the school or taking part outside of school.

At Key Stage 3 pupils will look to further embed their physical development and skills learnt at Key Stage 2. Pupils will become more competent, confident and expert in their techniques, and apply them across different sports and physical activities. Pupils will then look to develop analytical skills by analysing their own and others performance and techniques. Pupils will learn a wide range of sports ranging from: rugby, football, basketball, badminton, athletics, cricket, table tennis, boxing, fitness activities and swimming. Pupils will develop the confidence to get involved in exercise and sports outside of school and understand how living a healthy active lifestyle can have positive benefits upon their long-term health.

NCFE

At Key Stage 4 pupils will look to further master the skills they have been learning within Key Stage 3. Pupils will tackle further demanding physical activities and sports, and pupils will look to promote an active, healthy lifestyle through developing a passion for sport and sports they are learning. With pupils’ continuing to take part in regular competitive sports and activities outside school through the community links with sports clubs.’

Pupils also have the option to study a NCFE Level 1/2 Technical Award in Health and Fitness. This further allows the pupils to extend the practical skills that have been demonstrated at Key Stage 3, whilst combining these with and theoretical understanding of sporting performance and industries linked with sports. The course will prepare pupils for work or further studies in areas such as human biology, sports coaching, health and fitness and personal well-being.

The course is split into two different units:

Unit 1 – External Assessment (40%)

Within the external assessment the following topics are covered:

  • Skeletal System
  • Muscular System
  • Respiratory System
  • Cardiovascular System
  • Energy Systems

They will have to use all of the above to ensure the program is successful. These topics will be taught by both physical and theoretical methods.

At TIBHS, as a PE department we look to offer a wide range of sporting opportunities as part of our enrichment. This is all with the aim of further developing pupils’ passion for sport and looking to excel at these when competing. We compete against other schools from Blackburn with Darwen and also in Lancashire Competitions. We offer enrichments in a wide range of sports to give further opportunities for pupils to apply their learning and further master the skills they learn within Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4.

There are a wide range of careers that can be pursued by pupils at TIBHS. These are: sports coaching, sports development, teaching, lecturing, nutritionist, elite performance, performance analysist, personal trainer and physiotherapy.

Pupils with SEND are offered a wide, aspirational and ambitious curriculum across all subject areas through the All Stars Succeed strategy which emphasises the importance of Quality First Teaching. Every teacher has been trained on the understanding of pupil needs and implementation of high-impact adaptive strategies to enable pupils with SEND to make excellent progress, such as the use of High 5 strategies (informed by research conducted by the EEF) to create an inclusive environment in their teaching spaces. Moreover, the subject-specific All Stars Succeed charters allow for the implementation of subject-specific support in the classroom to help pupils overcome their barriers.

Collaboration between Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) and classroom practitioners on MS Teams before, during and after a lesson is a pivotal mechanism to ensure there is a coordinated approach towards support for pupils with SEND. This is evidenced with a purple pen in student books.

Star Maps are created in collaboration with the SENCO, class teachers, pupils and parents advising on strategies to help break down any barriers to learning. Strategies include adaptive teaching methods that are specific to a particular need as well as subject-specific adaptive teaching methods for subjects in which a pupil may find additional challenge due to his need. Star Maps are reviewed on a termly basis strategies by teachers, parents and pupils. These meetings are led by members of the senior leadership team. Star Maps support pupils with a variety of needs including, visual impairment, cognition and learning difficulties, physical disabilities, speech, language and communication difficulties, autistic spectrum disorder, dyslexia, and social, emotional and mental health difficulties.

Ancillary aids and assistive technologies are also utilised to enhance provision and ensure access. Learning aids are deployed to specific pupils with SEN, particularly those with visual impairments and difficulties with writing. Pupils are provided with a mobile learning device to aid research, independent working and innovative approaches to learning. Pupils are also given access to a Virtual Learning Environment through Microsoft Teams and Microsoft

OneNote to access resources and complete learning at school and at home with a device.

PE at TIBHS offers many leadership opportunities. The first is a sports team captain (Performance – Goal orientated, Self-belief and self-awareness, Moral – Making decisions and being accountable, Civic – Working together) chosen on the strength of his performance, ability to strategize and assessment of strengths and weaknesses of his opponents and the level of enthusiasm and commitment. The aim of the sports captain is to ensure the team is performing successfully, organised and keeping spirts high at all times.

PE Ambassadors is another role offered by the PE department. The main aims of PE ambassadors is to support the PE department with increasing participation in sports and health lifestyles. (Civic – Knowing and serving my community, Working together, Moral – Being a role model). PE ambassadors give pupils a voice in PE and an opportunity to look at which areas need to be developed. The PE ambassadors are also role models for the rest of the school and help to promote sport, motivate, and inspire other to get involved in sports and extracurricular activities. They also help with the organisation of sports days, charity events and school open events.

Pupils also have opportunities to show leadership when they are an Interform Captain. (Civic – Knowing and serving my community, Working together, Moral – Being a role model). These interform captains organise their teams in a range of different sporting interform competitions.
