Pupil’s poem captures spirit of Blackburn’s Holocaust commemorations

A young pupil from Tauheedul Islam Boys’ High School (TIBHS) created a heartfelt poem as part of Blackburn with Darwen’s Holocaust Memorial Day commemorations.

Zakaria Master read his poem, ‘Be the Light in Darkness’, which was written especially for the virtual event held on January 27.

The Year 8 pupil’s poem was chosen as part of a competition held across Blackburn with Darwen’s secondary schools to discover a poem that would capture the spirit of the commemorations.

Competition judges were impressed with the young pupil’s creativity, which called for us all to become ‘the light in others’ darkness’ during difficult times.

Majid Ditta, Principal at TIBHS, said that Holocaust Memorial Day was an important part of the school’s calendar.

He said: “Each year, on Holocaust Memorial Day, we pay tribute to the millions of people who have been murdered in genocides.

“This year, we were honoured to have one of our pupils selected to read his thoughtful poem as part of the commemorations in Blackburn.

“We are incredibly proud of Zakaria’s poem and its message of learning to be the light in darkness.

“We hope that his poem and our own important work educating our pupils about the atrocities of genocides will help to contribute to a more tolerant society.”

Be the Light in the Darkness

Everyone can be a full moon,
Shining bright in the night sky,
But they also have a dark side,
Which they often hide, but why?

Because darkness is a crippling condition,
Leading you to be paralysed,
Do not despair, make hope your mission,
And success, will soon be realised.

Humanity has suffered many dark nights,
Yet courageously it never gave up hope,
Because it continued searching for the light,
That was the secret that helped everyone cope.

Sometimes darkness can be overwhelming,
Do not be afraid, it is never too late,
Only light can extinguish darkness,
Only love can extinguish hate.

Millions of souls, borne from despair,
Rise to become stars, shining bright and fair,
All you need is hope to harness,
To be the light in others’ darkness.
