Talented pupil scoops major engineering scholarship

A talented teenager from Blackburn has been selected for a prestigious engineering scholarship.

Uzair Patel, a former pupil at Tauheedul Islam Boys’ High School (TIBHS), was awarded the Arkwright Engineering Scholarship ahead of thousands of other applicants thanks to his pioneering designs to improve 3D printers.

The 16 year-old was encouraged to apply for the Arkwright Engineering Scholarship by teachers at TIBHS who quickly identified the pupil’s natural talent for design and engineering.

To compete for the scholarship, Uzair had to take part in a gruelling nine-month application process where he demonstrated his exceptional ability through a series of tasks and presentations.

The scholarship means that the student, who is currently studying his A-Levels at Runshaw College, will have access to specialist mentoring, £600 funding to spend on components and materials to complete personal technical projects, and access to a series of events to inspire young engineers.

Uzair described his excitement at being selected for the scholarship, which he hopes will enable him to proceed to the next step of his engineering goals.

He said: “I was absolutely overjoyed to hear the news that I had been selected for the scholarship.

“I have always been interested in computing and engineering in general. I used to help my dad with his computer repair shop in Blackburn when I was younger and my mum was always helping me with craft projects. I think this helped to inspire my interest.

“My teachers at TIBHS really encouraged me to pursue my passion. They helped me to find opportunities and new projects which all helped me to grow in confidence and increase my knowledge. I am incredibly grateful to them for everything they have done for me.

“There is also an engineering club at the school where we all meet to discuss and plan our projects. It’s great to be around like-minded people who are working on similar projects.

“I’m really excited by the Arkwright scholarship, which I hope will help to support me as I work towards my goals. I would like to thank everyone who has helped me to pursue my ambition.”

In addition to his success with the Arkwright Scholarship, Uzair was pivotal to TIBHS’ latest social action project – Uniformity. Uzair led a group of pupils in creating an online portal through which parents are able to donate uniform which is then upcycled and resold. Profits were donated to the Shine Charity.

Majid Ditta, Principal at TIBHS, said: “We are incredibly proud of Uzair and his wonderful achievement.

“From the very start of his time at TIBHS, Uzair demonstrated an incredible talent for engineering and design. From helping older pupils with computer assignments, to volunteering at a local design club for young people, Uzair has always found ways to use his knowledge for good.

“Uzair has worked incredibly hard to pursue his goals and we know that his combination of talent and diligence will help him to go on to achieve great things.”

After completing his A-Levels, Uzair hopes to secure a scholarship or a place at university to study engineering.
