Pupils at Tauheedul Islam Boys’ High School (TIBHS) are celebrating their GCSE results following a year of pandemic related challenges.

Exams were cancelled this summer due to the COVID—19 pandemic. Exam boards issued qualifications based on grades decided by teachers following assessments and tests completed in school.

Today, pupils at TIBHS are collecting another exceptional set of GCSE results, which were earned against a backdrop of challenges including lockdowns, periods of self-isolation and ill health.

Pupil Ziyad Karolia thanked the staff and teachers at TIBHS after he achieved the top grade 9 in eleven GCSE subjects. Ziyad has chosen to further his education by studying for A levels at Runshaw College.

Ziyad said: “I’m so excited to have received the grades I need to go on to study further. This has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember. I can’t wait for college to begin in September so that I can continue to fulfil my dreams. Thank you so much to everyone at TIBHS for helping me to get so far, I really don’t think I could have done it without you.”

Aspiring medic Zubair Ahmed achieved the top grade 9 in ten subjects. Zubair praised the support he received at the school, which he said had encouraged him to try his hardest.

He said: “All the teachers and support staff have helped me so much. They showed me the steps I needed to take to achieve my dreams and, at each step, I was encouraged to go a little bit further. I am so grateful to everyone who has helped me to achieve these grades and for helping me to grow into the person I am today.”

Despite suffering from illness during the pandemic and throughout the assessments, Adil Patel achieved two grade 8s, one grade 7, three grade 6s and one Level 2 Merit in Creative iMedia.

Adil said: “I am so pleased with my results and, although it is a bit different this year, I’ve still worked really hard throughout school and am very glad to have achieved these grades.”

Haris Rehman overcame personal challenges to achieve two Grade 7s and five grade 6s. Haris thanked his school family and paid tribute to the supportive environment that had helped him to achieve his very best.

Haris said: “I am so pleased with my results. I’ve worked hard throughout my time at school and am very glad to have achieved these grades. I’ve had a great time at TIBHS and will really miss my school family. We’ve all supported one another through these difficult times, and I think that this has helped me to become the very best person I can be.”

At the school, 87% of pupils achieved GCSEs with grades 9-5 in English and Maths, whilst 57% achieved the English Baccalaureate.  The average grade (points score) in the English Baccalaureate subjects was 6.42.

The English Baccalaureate recognises achievement in a range of academic and challenging subjects. It is awarded to students who achieve grades 9-5 in English, Maths, Science, a modern foreign language and History or Geography. Nationally, around a tenth of students achieve the English Baccalaureate and the average grade in the English Baccalaureate subjects is 4.0.

Mr Ditta, Principal at TIBHS, congratulated pupils on their achievements which he said, demonstrated pupils’ resilience during a period of exceptional challenge.

He said: “I could not be prouder of our pupils’ achievements and am delighted that their hard work is reflected in their GCSE results. There is no doubt that this year has been incredibly difficult as a result of the challenges brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic, but through resilience, belief, drive and self-determination, today is a huge milestone for our pupils and the entire school community.”
